Field Trip – Soils of Dartmoor (Geology Section)
20 May 2017
Led by Dr Tim Harrod. Joint meeting with the Ussher Society.
We will look at soils on Dartmoor, from the comparatively dry lower ground east of Moreton, over to the blanket peat of the high moorland. Within those few miles the changes in soil, largely due to increasing wetness of the climate (rainfall roughly doubles), helped in places by generations of human land management, are easily demonstrated. And all this on a single parent material, the granite.
With one exception, conditions underfoot should be reasonably dry, but the blanket peat will call for good boots or wellies, even in May. Only a modest amount of walking will be involved.
