Visit to Sourton Quarry (Tavistock Branch)
8 June 2018 at 2:00 pm
Sourton Quarry produced high grade limestone in the 19th century, but closed due to flooding in 1906. There were various owners until ECC finished quarrying aggregate in 1960. The lease was then sold to Devon Wildlife Trust. It is now managed as a nature reserve. Features include remains of quarry buildings, interesting geology and protective measures for endangered species.
Take A386 from Tavistock to Sourton Cross. Turn left onto the old A30 to Bridestowe immediately before the Sourton road junction. Drive approx. 1 mile, turn right into Truscote Way. There is ample road parking here.
Cross main road to bridle path entrance where you will be met. Five minute walk along track to quarry gate.
Stout footwear is essential!
