Tony Beard’s Thanksgiving Service

The Association was well represented among nearly a thousand friends who attended Tony Beard’s Thanksgiving at Exeter cathedral on the 28th January 2017. It was in every way a fitting tribute to a much loved and hugely respected Devonian whose portrait on the front of the service sheet showed him proudly wearing his DA lapel badge. There were wonderful hymns, including the farmers’ favourite song of harvest “We plough the fields and scatter” to start and “Guide me O thou great Redeemer” at the end of the service, and a brilliant rendition of Lennon and McCartney’s “Blackbird” by members of his family. Tributes were introduced by his Radio Devon colleagues and included words from his family, music and words from Widecombe, and from our President Todd Gray on behalf of the Association. As we left, Morris dancers reflected our sense of joy for a life so richly and fully lived and the cathedral bells rang out over the city, all as Tony wished.
