17th century Atlas of British Isles (Tavistock Branch)
Fri. 15 December 2023 at 2:30 pm
£2 – £3
A talk by Tony Gale.
John Ogilby’s Britannia was a monumental effort which entailed surveying 23,000 miles of roads across Great Britain. This gives us many unique insights into 17th-century England, and some beautiful and intriguing maps. Tony Gale’s talk will discuss the background to Britannia and look in detail at some of the maps depicting places in Devon – including (of course) Tavistock.
Tony Gale is a local historian who specialises in the history of Devon. He is a trustee of the Devon & Cornwall Record Society, as well as being involved with the Devon History Society and local groups in his home-town of Crediton.
DA members £2, non-members are welcome at £3.
Note that unlike most of this Branch’s talks, this one is being held at 2:30 in the afternoon.
