3,000 Years of History from under the Sea (Tavistock Branch)

Fri. 13 October 2023 at 7:30 pm

£2 – £3

In 1995 a team of amateur divers working in the Erme Estuary made one of the most important maritime discoveries of Bronze Age artefacts, proving for the first time that trade existed between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.  Lying next to the Bronze Age wreck is a 17th-century cannon site, named as the richest wreck carrying Islamic gold in northern Europe.  The talk will cover four shipwrecks from this one area of the seabed.

The speaker, Ron Howell, is the secretary of the South West Maritime Archaeological Group and is responsible for the amazing discoveries, breaking the surface on that day in 1995 with his hands clutching gold coins, nuggets and jewellery.

DA members £2, non-members are welcome at £3.
