Section AGM at the Town Hall, Great Torrington.
The Town Hall dominates the centre of the town and was for several centuries the hub of the civic, social and judicial life of this ancient borough. The building has an imposing facade in the classical style and an impressive interior. Grade II listed and now restored to its former glory, it is considered one of the grandest Halls in North Devon.
Originally an agricultural centre and strategic crossing point on the river Torridge, Torrington retains many buildings of interest associated with the local industries of milling, wool manufacture and glove making.
10:00 Assemble in the Town Hall for coffee and biscuits.
10:30 Dr Hugh Reed on ‘The History and Historic Buildings of Torrington’.
Hugh Reed has researched the town’s history and recently published an historical sourcebook of buildings, people and past industries.
11:30 Annual General Meeting in the Oak Room.
12:30 For members who have attended the AGM, a sandwich lunch will be provided in the Long Room.
1:15 Depart Town Hall and return to cars for the 10-mile drive to Tawstock, clearly signposted from the B3232, and taking around 20 minutes.
