What Inspired Me!
Images and other representations of insects have long played a cultural role in human society from the earliest depictions of honeybees over 5,000 years ago (and much earlier according to some) through to the modern day revival of antique images on decorative china and cartoon bees on cornflakes packets.
Many of us will have collected such items as part of our fascination with insects and it would be a terrific start to a new year of entomological endeavours if we could each bring along an example of an insect (or other invertebrate), cultural artefact and share its story and significance with the group. Anything goes: a society tie-pin, decorative ceramic, a badge from your youth, a book, poster from a memorable event, vintage brooch, favourite tee-shirt, cuddly toy or pair of socks!
