AGM 2024 and Paddle Steamer talk (IA Section)
Sat. 17 February 2024 at 11:00 am
£3 – £5
A talk “Challenges in Maintaining the Paddle Steamer Kingswear Castle” by John Megoran
The Kingswear Castle was built by Philip & Sons of Dartmouth in 1924 for service on the River Dart, following sister ships Compton Castle and Totnes Castle, operated by the River Dart Steamboat Co. Her predecessor of the same name, dating from 1904, provided the engine now used in the present steamer. During World War II, she was chartered by the United States Navy for carrying stores and personnel at Dartmouth.
After a period of deterioration, she was purchased by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society in 1967, following which John Megoran returned it to service on the Medway and Thames in 1985. He also ran the business, and sailed her as principal captain until 2012. He is currently chairman of the Paddle Steamer Kingswear Castle Trust.
John’s talk will be followed by two short papers presented by IASDA members.
The AGM will be at 12.30 to be followed by lunch.
Members are encouraged to stay for lunch at the hotel at 1 pm. Bookings will be taken at the beginning of the meeting, when menus will be available.
Coffee may be purchased at the bar at 10.30 am before the talk.
Meeting fee £3 for DA-members and £5 for non-members.
