Appledore Smuggling and Shipwrecks (Bideford Branch)

Fri. 20 November 2020 at 2:00 pm

Free

To be held by Zoom video conferencing

David Carter, genealogist, director of Docton Court Gallery, and author of three books on Appledore’s history, presents: ‘Appledore Smuggling and Shipwrecks – The Truth’.

We’ve all heard stories about smuggling, but what really happened? How prevalent was it, and who was involved? David’s own research will shed an interesting light on this oft-embellished illicit trade.

David will also be talking about how common shipwrecks were in the age of sail, including the worst night in North Devon history when over 100 men lost their lives in a single wreck.
