A talk entitled Art in Elizabethan Devon to be given by Honorary Professor Sam Smiles, University of Exeter.
Professor Smiles will be talking about Exeter’s most famous artist, Nicholas Hilliard (c. 1547 – 1619), whose miniature portraits are regarded as the most refined artistic achievements of the Elizabethan court.
Using Hilliard’s dates as a chronological framework, this talk will look at the contributions he and others made to the arts of painting, sculpture, architecture, metalwork and design both within and beyond Devon in this period.
The entrance fee (£3 for members, £3.50 for non-DA members) will include tea and biscuits.
