Blackborough Whetstone Mines (IA Section)
Mon. 8 April 2019 at 10:00 am
£3 – £5
Meet at Blackborough Village Hall (GR ST096088) at 10.00am (on left at top of hill) for talks about the geology of the area, the mining methods used, and the use, transport and sale of whetstones and the manufacture of the modern replacement carborundum, by Prof. John Mather and others.
This will be followed by a geology walk, led by Dr Jenny Bennett, planned to start at 11.00. Expect some rough ground; boots recommended.
Also an afternoon visit has been arranged to Blackborough House (for a restricted number, who must have hard hats). The house was built in 1838 by J T Knowles in Italianate style for the 4th Earl of Egremont. It is listed Grade II but has fallen into severe disrepair over the last 40 years. The present owner is planning to restore it as a hotel and we hope he will be able to tell us about his plans and the challenges it presents.
The charge is £3 for DA members, non-DA £5.
There is additional car parking adjacent to the churchyard (GR ST094093) (just beyond the Hall). EX15 2HJ.
