Dr David Atkinson presents
Broadside Ballads – Grisly Stories from the Past
at the Devon and Exeter Institution, Exeter.
Dr Atkinson, Editor of Folk Music Journal and Honorary Research Fellow at the Elphinstone Institute, University of Aberdeen, will talk about ballads and songs printed on broadside sheets from the sixteenth to the late nineteenth century.
Following the history of the broadside trade, we will encounter some of the murder and execution ballads that were printed throughout the period, like The Cruel Ship’s Carpenter, The Cruel Miller and the Murder of Maria Marten, with some live music examples.
Dr Atkinson’s most recent book The Ballad and its Pasts, was published in 2018.
