Broadside Ballads (Music Section)

Mon. 20 June 2022 at 7:30 pm

Dr David Atkinson presents
Broadside Ballads – Grisly Stories from the Past

Dr Atkinson, Editor of Folk Music Journal and Honorary Research Fellow at the Elphinstone Institute, University of Aberdeen, will talk about ballads and songs printed on broadside sheets from the sixteenth to the late nineteenth century.

Following the history of the broadside trade, we will encounter some of the murder and execution ballads that were printed throughout the period, like The Cruel Ship’s Carpenter, The Cruel Miller and the Murder of Maria Marten. Paul Wilson will sing a selection of songs to entertain you.

Dr Atkinson’s most recent book The Ballad and its Pasts, was published in 2018.

The Broadside trade finds local printing presses in Devon for example in Bideford, Exeter and Plymouth.

Note that due to unforeseen circumstances, this event was held via Zoom and not as originally planned at the Devon and Exeter Institution in Exeter.

The fee of £12 applies per Zoom link, not per person.

Booking for this event was available online via WebCollect.
