A talk by Robin Wootton.
Charles Kingsley was born and brought up in Devon and became the 10th President of the Devonshire Association. Perhaps best known as author of The Water Babies, he was also an independent-minded clergyman, polemicist, social reformer, geologist and historian – in short a true polymath. In this talk Dr. Robin Wootton, Hon. Fellow of the University of Exeter and himself the forthcoming Honorary President of the Devonshire Association for 2021 – 2022, will explore Kingsley’s life and discuss how his strongly-held views on society, sanitation, celibacy and evolution permeate his writings.
