Celebrating Devon’s World-Class Heritage
This year, the Devonshire Association is ‘Celebrating Devon’s World-Class Heritage’ in a project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund which aims to raise awareness of our county’s UNESCO-designated natural and cultural heritage and the Devonshire Association’s role in promoting that heritage over the past 163 years.
See this page for details of all the events.
Public Lecture by Professor Peter Stott.
In this lecture, “Climate Change and Devon’s World-Class Environment” Professor Stott will be looking at the impact of climate change with reference to Devon’s UNESCO sites.
It will be held in the Devonport Lecture Theatre, Portland Square Building on the campus of the University of Plymouth.
Professor PETER STOTT MBE is an international leader in the detection and attribution of climate change. He led the team that provided one of the most important demonstrations that anthropogenic emissions were to blame for global temperature changes and also led the first study to link an individual weather event – the 2003 European heatwave – with human induced climate change. He leads the Climate Monitoring and Attribution team of the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research at the Met Office in Exeter. In 2021, he published the book Hot Air: the Inside Story of the Battle Against Climate Change Denial, a thorough account of the decades-long battle to deny or downplay the existence of the climate crisis, for which he was shortlisted for the 2022 RSL Christopher Bland Prize.

The entrance to the Portland Square Building faces North Hill, and there is full disabled access. There is, unfortunately, no parking available on the University campus, though public parking is available nearby.
After the lecture, there will be a reception with light refreshments which will be held in the area adjacent to the lecture theatre. This will allow participants to engage with the speaker and members of the Devonshire Association, who will be able to explain the various activities of the Association which take place across the county every year.
Anyone may attend the lecture at no charge, but booking is essential, see below.
This is the last of 15 events being held in 2025, ‘Celebrating Devon’s World-Class Heritage’, which have been supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and UNESCO.
