Conchies in Dartmoor Prison (Bideford Branch)
Fri. 15 February 2019 at 2:00 pm
A talk by Simon Dell, Director – Moorland Guides. Conscription began in 1916 and men who refused to fight were known as ‘Conscientious Objectors’ and the derogatory term ‘Conchie’ was born.
There were approximately 16,000 objectors during the First World War and Dartmoor Prison was handed over to the military authorities in 1917 to become the Princetown Work Centre.
Note change of date and venue – this event was previously advertised as being held on 8 February in the Burton Art Gallery.
