Celebrating Devon’s World-Class Heritage: Discovery Days

This year, the Devonshire Association is ‘Celebrating Devon’s World-Class Heritage’ in a project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund which aims to raise awareness of our county’s UNESCO designated natural and cultural heritage and the Devonshire Association’s role in promoting that heritage over the past 163 years.

See this page for details of all the events.

Tavistock and the Tamar Valley’s significance in the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site will be explored in two Discovery Days:

  • A day of talks on Saturday 26th April, in Tavistock Town Hall (see here), and
  • A day of walks, led by experts, along the Tavistock Canal and at Devon Great Consols on Saturday 17th May (this page).

Programme for the day of walks

  • 10.00 Meet outside Tavistock Wharf (SX 480 742) for welcome and introduction to the day
  • 10.10 Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site: the context by Ainsley Cocks, WHS team.
  • 10.20 Walk along the Tavistock Canal to Crowndale Woods guided by archaeologists Robert Waterhouse and Andrew Thompson.
The walk is fairly level, though along paths which are narrow and may be muddy in places. Appropriate footwear should be worn and care should be taken as we are following a water course. The walk will be approximately 45 minutes each way – 1.5 hours in total. We aim to finish by 12 noon.
Toilets are available in Bedford car park. Please bring your own refreshments.
  • 14.00 Meet at Tamar Trails Sawmills car park, Gulworthy (SX 440 727).
After an introduction by Ainsley Cocks, we will walk to Wheal Anna Maria (part of Devon Great Consols mine). We will be walking along rough tracks which may be muddy in places. Appropriate footwear should be worn and care taken as there are areas of steep drops, deep water and soil toxicity. The walk will last for approximately 2 hours.
Car parking at the Sawmills car park is pay and display and an all-day ticket should be purchased in case of delays on our walk. Toilets are available at the Tamar Trails Centre near the car park. Please bring your own refreshments.
