Dartmoor – a wild and wondrous region (Lit & Art Section)
Sat. 11 May 2019 at 2:30 pm
£2 – £3
An illustrated talk by Peter F. Mason, a local historian with a passion for art, who writes for the Dartmoor Magazine and is Chairman of the Lustleigh Society. He researched and co-curated the exhibition, Dartmoor, A Wild & Wondrous Region, at RAMM in 2018.
Peter will discuss how how a small group of eighteenth and nineteenth century artists changed the public perception of Dartmoor from dreary wilderness to the epitome of the “picturesque”, and how the sublime landscapes and depictions of rural life and vernacular architecture were captured by artists such as J.M.W. Turner, Samuel Palmer and William and F.J Widgery. The talk will tell this story from the mid eighteenth century until the early years of the twentieth.
