Full title: “Dartmoor Industrial Archaeology, the threat it faces and our management of it”
A talk by Lee Bray, archaeologist to Dartmoor National Park.
Remains of industrial workings on Dartmoor date at least to the Roman period. Copper and tin were mined after the Middle Ages, and the remains of the works of The Old Men can be seen widely. With the exhaustion of more accessible lodes, adits and mine shafts were built when water pumps were developed to drain ground water. Mining for other metals, the extraction of kaolin and quarrying of granite are amongst many other industries that have left their relics on the moor.
Lee Bray is an archaeologist of Dartmoor National Park. After taking a degree in geology and working in the oil industry, Lee became interested in archaeology and acquired a PhD at the University of Exeter on the subject of Romano-British ironworking on Exmoor.
