Devon Footstones (Bideford & N Devon Branch)

A talk by Dr Helen Wilson.

Since retiring from the University of Plymouth, Helen has developed interests in local history, architecture and churches. Among the unusual memorials she noticed in graveyards were intriguing ‘footstones’ – similar to headstones but with a verse rather than names or dates – which are particularly prevalent in north Devon.

The talk will explore the types of footstones and their characteristics, attempting to produce a chronology linked to where they occur.
