Devon’s Antarctic Connections

Tue. 21 March 2023 at 7:00 pm

A Zoom talk presented by Paul Davies – President of the Devon & Cornwall Polar Society.

This illustrated talk will cover some of Devon’s links to the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration (1901-22) drawing on some new research into the local men and places associated with Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton’s expeditions.

Paul Davies’s interest in polar exploration started as a boy reading about the exploits of Ernest Shackleton and has led to all sorts of experiences including visiting Antarctica in 2014. Paul is now President of the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society after setting up the Society 15 years ago. Membership is made up of polar enthusiasts, ex BAS people, descendants of explorers and clinicians from the BAS Medical Unit at Derriford. It meets at least twice a year and has organised some major events in Plymouth to commemorate the centenary of Scott and Shackleton’s Antarctic expeditions. Paul has written a small book about local polar connections called From South Devon to the South Pole (2011) and he trades in second-hand polar books and ephemera.

Please book with the organiser (details below) by a day before the event. You will be sent a link to access the Zoom session.

This talk is part of The Devonshire Association Monthly Lecture Series – a programme of talks on a wide range of topics presented by informed and respected speakers throughout the year using Zoom technology.
