Eileen Hendriks, the Rock Lady (Geology Section)

To be held by Zoom video conferencing.

A talk “Eileen Hendriks, the Rock Lady – disentangling Devonian geology in Devon and Cornwall” to be given by Dr Jenny Bennett.

Eileen Hendriks (1887–1978) played a pivotal role in resolving the stratigraphy and structure of Devon and Cornwall, despite difficult family circumstances, the impact on her career of two world wars, financial problems, loneliness and the general apathy of the wider geological community. Although regarded by some as an amateur, perhaps because she was unconnected with any institution, she was treated as the acknowledged authority by the young researchers who started to work in the SW after 1950. She is still remembered and respected for her painstaking work in an area which was apparently barren of fossils, causing the Geological Survey to revise a map and memoir less than 20 years after publication.
The map shows the field area where her meticulous research resolved the Palaeozoic stratigraphy and structure of South-West England.
