Field trip to Billacombe Green (Botany Section)

Sat. 25 May 2024 at 10:30 am

Billacombe Green is a species-rich neutral grassland in Plymstock, designated an SSSI because of the presence of Field Eryngo (Eryngium campestre). Many other nice species grow there such as Common Gromwell (Lithospermum officinale) and Yellow Oat-grass (Trisetum flavescens). This will be a shorter visit as it won’t take us all day to explore the site.

Meet on Billacombe Road where a lane runs up to the site (SX51775379 ///scans.cared.really). Note the earlier start time. There is a good bus service along Billacombe Road from the city centre, even better to the supermarket at the roundabout at the Pomphlett Road junction from where the start point to is a relatively short walk. If you are coming by car, you should find space to park on the old section of Billacombe Road which runs one way, westward and parallel to the new road. Alternatively try the side roads off Southernway. There are no public toilets nearby and be prepared for lots of dog-walkers!

Botany Section meetings are from 11.00 a.m. to approximately 4.00 p.m., unless otherwise stated. Bring packed lunch, appropriate footwear and clothing, as well as sufficient water, sun-block, insect repellent or other essentials required for a day outdoors. Please contact the leader if you wish to attend – meeting details can sometimes change at short notice and if the weather forecast looks poor the meeting may have to be cancelled. You should also check with the leader if you wish to bring your dog.

Non members are welcome.
