Field Trip to Bolberry Down and Hope Cove (Geology Section)

Tue. 25 June 2024

£5 – £7

To be led by Dr Richard Porter, Geology Section Chairman.

This beautiful part of the South Hams can boast some stunning coastal scenery and an idyllic old fishing village. The origin of the scenery will form a large part of what is to seen as well as examining the two main rock types, i.e. the metamorphic schists that form most of the cliffs in this area and the slates, commonly known as The Dartmouth Slates to the north. How the geology determines the landscape can be demonstrated and some time will be spent on the beach at Hope Cove for participants to try and find the boundary between these two rock types.

This field trip is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience.

Hope Cove

Start time to be advised.

The total walking distance, mostly on the SW Coast Path and the beach is approx. 4 miles. This is about 2.25 miles down to Hope Cove and about 1.5 miles back to the Bolberry Car Park. The only steep up section is on the return but one or two cars maybe parked in Hope Cove to shuttle those not wishing to walk to return to their cars.

The Bolberry Car Park is on National Trust property and parking is therefore free to members, but you will need your NT pass.

Booking is required with the organiser, details below. The cost is £5 for DA members,  £7 for non-members.
