Cancelled – Field trip to Hartland Quay (Botany Section)

This stretch of coast is a dramatic example of North Devon’s Atlantic shoreline. The visit would be particularly suited to those with less botanical experience, as, although the area is not known for its rarities, many typical elements of North Devon’s Atlantic-facing clifftop flora will be present. The likes of Spring Squill (Scilla verna), Wild Carrot’s maritime subspecies (Daucus carota subsp. gummifer), Burnet Rose (Rosa spinosissima), Scurvey-grass (Cochlearia officinalis), Thrift (Armeria maritima) and Kidney Vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria) all contribute to the springtime show on this coast.

We will work south toward Speke’s Mill Mouth, then retrace our steps. Expect the round trip to be about 3 km. The path is rough in places, and, as with many coastal paths, includes some ups and downs where it crosses stream valleys, or where we divert off-piste.

We will meet in the car-park (£3 charge at time of writing).

Botany Section events are from 11.00 a.m. to approximately 4.00 p.m., unless otherwise stated. Bring packed lunch, appropriate footwear and clothing, as well as sufficient water, sun-block, insect repellent or other essentials required for a day outdoors. Please contact the leader if you wish to attend – meeting details can sometimes change at short notice and if the weather forecast looks poor the meeting may have to be cancelled. You should also check with the leader if you wish to bring your dog.

Our meetings are free to Devonshire Association members. Non-members are very welcome to join us, but we would suggest a donation of £3 to £5 (in cash please) to help support our work.
