Field Trip to Hooten Wheals (IA Section)

Sat. 23 May 2026 at 2:00 pm

£3 – £5

A field trip to Hooten Wheals Tin Workings, Hexworthy to be led by Stephen Holley of Dartmoor Tin Working Research Group (DTRG)

Starting at 2pm from the Forest Inn, Hexworthy PL20 6SD

The walk will visit the extensive remains of Hexworthy Mine, also known as Hooten Wheals and Hensroost. This remote mine situated 1,300 ft above sea-level witnessed tin working activity over hundreds of years. Many extensive openwork gullies survive in the vicinity of Hensroost and Hooten Wheals. The mine itself is not documented until the late 1880’s and 1890’s. Many of the surviving features and buildings date to the late 19th to early 20th century when the mine was operated by John Taylor & Son and subsequently Bayldon and Struben. The dressing floor at the site of the shaft are the remains of an expensive programme of modernisation that took place during the last phase of operation from 1905 to 1918 when the mine was operated by Dartmoor Minerals Ltd.

Stephen is chairman of DTRG, a very active group that explores the archaeology of tin mines on Dartmoor. It maintains a website at https://dtrg.org.uk/

The walk is on rough and bumpy terrain adjacent to fenced but open wheel pits. There are steep slopes and uneven ground with potential hazards of slips and tripping. Stout footwear and hiking poles should be considered.

Attendees may wish to lunch at the Forest Inn beforehand, ready to start the walk at 2pm. Booking with Paddy at 01364 631211, mentioning DA/DTRG affiliation and any allergies &c, is advised. Parking is available at the inn and, we understand, should be available for the 3-hour duration of the walk.

The number is limited to 25. Please register with the organiser providing a telephone number. Fee: £3 for Devonshire Association and DTRG members, £5 for non-members.
