Field trip to Lincombe and Dunscombe, Salcombe Regis (Botany Section)

Sat. 15 June 2024 at 11:00 am

Meet at the car park of the Donkey Sanctuary signposted from the A3052 two miles east of Sidmouth at SY 15895 89177. Should you arrive early, entry to the Sanctuary is free and the café is excellent.

Lincombe and Dunscombe are small valleys that interrupt this clifftop section of the SW Coast Path. They cut through a mix of geology and habitats including unimproved grassland, steep greensand slopes (optional) and an area of now abandoned small Victorian arable plots that took advantage of the very sheltered location to raise early vegetables. It is hoped we may locate plants recorded here in the Victorian Flora Sidostiensis but not found in recent surveys by the local Sid Valley Biodiversity Group, including Lathyrus aphaca, Neottia cordata, Asplenium marinum, Cynoglossum officinale, and Artemisia absinthium among others.

Botany Section meetings are from 11.00 a.m. to approximately 4.00 p.m., unless otherwise stated. Bring packed lunch, appropriate footwear and clothing, as well as sufficient water, sun-block, insect repellent or other essentials required for a day outdoors. Please contact the leader if you wish to attend – meeting details can sometimes change at short notice and if the weather forecast looks poor the meeting may have to be cancelled. You should also check with the leader if you wish to bring your dog.

Non members are welcome.
