Fox’s Tonedale Works, Wellington (IA Section)

Sat. 17 January 2026 at 10:30 am

£3 – £5

A talk to be given by Vanessa Rhulig.

Tonedale Works is a large textile mill in Wellington, the largest in South West England, owned for over 200 years by members of the Fox family. It was famous for its Taunton Serge, and later produced khaki cloth and puttees for the British Army. The building was also used for joinery, book binding and metalworking. Vanessa’s talk will explore its problems and ideas for its restoration.

Vanessa Ruhlig MPhil BArch(Hons) BSc(Arch) is Associate and Heritage Researcher at THREAD, a team of specialist conservation architects, who tackle projects in the most challenging areas of the specialty. Utilising historic techniques, THREAD works to bring lost buildings back from the brink. Vanessa is also chair of the Young Members Board of the Association for Industrial Archaeology.

In the Club Room at Willand Village Hall. 10.30 for coffee, talk to start at 11am.

Note that this talk is on Saturday 17 Jan, not Wednesday the 14th as previously advertised here. Apologies for the error.
