An illustrated talk by Robin Wootton entitled “Gills, tails and sexual orgies: the fascinating Mayflies”.
The Ephemeroptera rarely feature in our programmes but Robin seeks to right this omission and give us an insight into this ancient order.
Mayflies are survivors. With an intriguing combination of primitive and advanced, specialised features, members of this ancient group exploit a wide range of habitats and food sources in fresh water, culminating in a brief, often spectacular mating swarm on the wing. Using slides, video clips and a range of models, Robin will explore the special adaptations, both in water and in the air, that contribute to the mayflies’ continuing success.
All are welcome: DA members £2, non-members £3.
