Guided walk near Tor Royal (Tavistock Branch)

Thu. 16 July 2026 at 1:00 pm

£10 – £12

At the Branch’s meeting in February, Dr Martin Gillard and George Kohler gave a talk about the South-West Peatlands Restoration Project. Peatlands globally store more carbon than all the world’s forests combined, but when they dry out, they release carbon and other greenhouse gases. The South-West Peatland Partnership (SWPP) is working to restore degraded peatland across West Penwith, Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor and Exmoor.

One of the areas of particular SWPP activity is just outside of Princetown and is known as the Tor Royal Bog. This is the only example of a raised bog on Dartmoor, created when the peat deposit forms a smooth dome, raised higher than the surrounding water table, becoming fed by rainwater rather than groundwater. This important habitat covers approximately 8 hectares and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as being included in the Dartmoor Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Given its proximity to Tavistock, Martin and George have offered to give a guided walk around this unique Dartmoor peatland. Some of you may also remember the excellent cream tea we had following a tour of the historic Tor Royal farmhouse last year. We have been able to combine these two activities into a walk, followed by a cream tea, on Thursday 16th July.

However, we have to stress that this walk is not for the faint hearted. We will be walking over rough moorland and standing for a couple of hours, possibly in hot sun or perhaps driving rain! Everyone will need to be prepared for very changeable weather, and be geared for the occasion depending on the forecast. There is also the ever present threat of ticks when walking on Dartmoor. Having emphasised the downsides of this event it should very interesting and enjoyable for those are able to attend.

The plan is to meet at 1pm at the old quarry car park (turn right past Tor Royal farmhouse – PL20 6SL) for the two hours walk and talk. Then drive back to Tor Royal for the cream tea.

The cost is £10 for members and £12 for non-members. If you think you can’t manage the walk but would just like the cream tea and a chat, then please book and arrive at Tor Royal at 3pm.

Numbers for this event will be limited and so in order to reserve a place please contact the organiser, details below. Payment will be requested by bank transfer 14 days before the event.
