History of the Devon Ball Clay Industry and the Stover Canal (Tavistock Branch)

Fri. 11 December 2020 at 7:30 pm

Free

To be held by Zoom video conferencing

A talk by Darrin Hewings, a fifth generation clay worker employed by Sibelco, whose association with the clay industry producing world-renowned ball clay in the south west stretches back for over 300 years with production sites in more than 31 countries.

Built in the late 18th century at a time when the ball clay industry was expanding, though transport of the bulky product was difficult, the canal was formally abandoned in 1943. Work on its restoration is currently in progress.
