Event Navigation
A second visit this year to Lewtrenchard Manor, the Forgotten Garden, the Holy Well and St Peter’s Church.
Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (1834–1924), President of the Devonshire Association in 1896, is well known as a prolific author, a writer of hymns, an antiquarian and a collector of folk songs. His family home Lew House, now a hotel, Lewtrenchard Manor, was extensively remodelled by Baring-Gould after he moved there in 1881.
Our tour, led by Baring-Gould expert Dr Ron Wawman, will explore Sabine’s rich legacy in the house and church. At the church Dr Helen Wilson will also discuss the work of the Pinwill sisters, who, under the direction of Bligh Bond, Baring-Gould’s cousin, made a rood screen based on fragments of a medieval original, and carved other work.
