Manuscript Maps of Devon

Tue. 21 November 2023 at 7:00 pm

Free – £2.50

A Zoom talk presented by Todd Gray MBE – Historian and Author.

Dr Todd Gray was born in New England, USA and first visited Devon on a school trip in 1973. After his first degree in London he started studying for a PhD at Exeter University in 1984. He has devoted his working career to the study of Devon’s history. His passion for his adopted county is evident through his many publications and in his lectures. He is a past Chairman and President of The Devonshire Association and he has written more widely on Devon than any other historian. He was appointed MBE in 2014 and awarded Honorary Freedom of the City of Exeter in 2018.

Recent discoveries of previously unknown maps of Barnstaple and Exeter remind us of the extraordinary number we have of Devon. Maps were created for a variety of reasons and often offer the first surviving depiction of individual buildings. In this lecture Todd Gray will explore some of the notable examples and introduce others of places across the county.

Please book with the organiser (details below) by a day before the event. You will be sent a link to access the Zoom session.

This talk is part of The Devonshire Association Monthly Lecture Series – a programme of talks on a wide range of topics presented by informed and respected speakers throughout the year using Zoom technology.
