What’s going on in Iceland (Geology Section)

Thu. 12 November 2026 at 7:00 pm

£3 – £5

Online Zoom lecture from Prof. Hazel Rymer.

Currently Hazel is Emeritus Professor of Environmental Volcanology at the Open University. Her research has focussed on finding ways to use geophysics to understand more about how volcanoes work. She has worked on active volcanoes from Chile to Iceland and from Central America to Greece. Her main contributions have been (i) to identify the gravity signatures of calderas in a state of unrest, (ii) to map out the sub-surface structures of several volcanoes and (iii) use microgravity monitoring to identify precursors to eruptions.

Iceland’s volcanoes have been in and out of the news, but what is really going on there? This talk will explain some of what we know about the past, present and future of Iceland’s geology. We’ll look at the causes of volcanism in Iceland and its impact there and beyond.
