Of making many books there is no end: Devon bibliography past present and future
Tue. 20 February 2024 at 7:00 pm
Free – £2.50
A Zoom talk presented by Ian Maxted – book historian and bibliographer.
Ian Maxted was Devon’s Local Studies Librarian, based in the Westcountry Studies Library, from 1977 to 2015 and has compiled the Devon Bibliography since 1985. He is the author of The story of the book in Exeter and Devon (2021) and books and articles on book history in Devon, London, Normandy and Weimar. He has also worked on the libraries of Sabine Baring-Gould and the Coffin family of Portledge, North Devon.
Ian will trace the story of book listing in Devon from the medieval inventories of Exeter Cathedral Library, through Davidson’s Bibliotheca Devoniensis, the efforts of Burnet Morris and the Devonshire Association, the Westcountry Studies Library and its aftermath, and how we might pick up the pieces in the digital age.
Please book with the organiser (details below) by a day before the event. You will be sent a link to access the Zoom session.
This talk is part of The Devonshire Association Monthly Lecture Series – a programme of talks on a wide range of topics presented by informed and respected speakers throughout the year using Zoom technology.
