Organ Music for Christmas at Buckfast Abbey
Thu. 16 December 2021 at 2:00 pm
In chordis et organo: a celebration of organ music for Christmas
to be presented by David Davies at Buckfast Abbey Church.
David Davies trained as an organist, pianist and conductor at Eton College, at Magdalen College, Oxford, and at the Institute of Sacred Music, Yale University. David held church and cathedral appointments both in the USA and the UK, as Assistant Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral and Sub-Organist and Director of the Girls’ Choir at Guildford Cathedral. He is currently Organist of Buckfast Abbey and Organist at the University of Exeter. He has given concerts across the USA, Japan, South Africa and in several European countries. He tutors on organ academy courses, lectures frequently on the intersection of the arts and liturgy.
Today he will give an illustrated talk on organ music for Christmas, exploring its themes, and performing on the acclaimed Fratelli Ruffatti organ of Buckfast Abbey. Those attending the event will have a chance to have a bird’s eye view of the Abbey organ console, and the presentation will include a performance of some seasonal music by Devon composer, Dom Sebastian Wolff, O.S.B.
The complimentary tea/coffee has sadly had to be cancelled due to covid precautions, but The Grange Restaurant will be open. With the size of the Abbey Church, social distancing during the event should be less of an issue, but we do ask attendees to observe all the normal precautions.
Places will be limited to 60 and booking is essential via the organiser, contact details below. Preference will be given to members of the DA and their family/friends. Closing date for bookings was 12 noon on 15 December.
The event is free, but donations will be welcomed.
