Pirates, Merchants, Smugglers and Spies (Bideford & N Devon Branch)

A talk by Teresa Tinsley entitled “Pirates, Merchants, Smugglers and Spies. North Devonians and the Spanish Inquisition”.

Based on research for her PhD Teresa’s talk will be concerned with the experiences of English people at the hands of the Spanish Inquisition during the 16th century. The talk will present findings from five inquisition trials of men from North Devon caught up in the religious and naval conflict between Spain and England during the reign of Elizabeth I.
