Full title: Raphael in Cornwall – New Sources for the Long Gallery at Lanhydrock
A talk by Dr Péter Bokody at the Custom House Visitor Centre, Exeter.
Magnificent decorative plasterwork of the 17th century, thought to be the work of the Abbott family of Frithelstock, near Bideford, can be found across Devon, including in Exeter’s Custom House where the Abbott ceilings have recently been conserved. We will have the opportunity to view this work from 1p.m. before a 2p.m. talk given by Dr Péter Bokody, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Plymouth. Péter is the principal investigator of the AHRC-funded research project, Genesis in Plaster: Designing and Making the Long Gallery at Lanhydrock.
Péter notes that ‘The Long Gallery at Lanhydrock is one of the most complex monuments of narrative plasterwork. Tentatively linked to the Abbott workshop, the understanding of this imagery is dependent on the knowledge of the continental print sources the plasterers had at their disposal. The talk will explore some 17th century compendiums that found their way to Cornwall from Italy and the Low Countries.’
Booking essential. Please contact the organiser by Wednesday 12 November.
Price: £3 for DA members; £5 for non-members. Details on how to pay will be sent to everyone who books.
