A native of the NE of England and a graduate of University of Sheffield, Bettie Higgs worked for the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, and the Geological Survey of Ireland in Dublin before joining UCC over 30 years ago. Bettie was a Senior Lecturer in Geology in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) until retirement in 2015, and Vice-President for Teaching and Learning at UCC from 2013-2014.
Bettie’s research included numerical modelling of plate tectonics and shallow sub-surface geophysical investigation. She continues to carry out research into the potential benefits of interdisciplinary field-based learning, as well as the role of women in the history of science.
In 2022 she received the Distinguished Service Award from the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and the Lifetime Contribution Award from University College Cork.
