Full title “The Isles of Scilly beckoned like syrens from their dangerous shores”: Reappraising the South-Western travel writings of George Eliot and George Henry Lewes.

A talk by Beth Howell, Collections and Research Assistant/Activity Coordinator at the Devon and Exeter Institution. She is currently finishing her PhD research into literary tourists to Scilly between 1847 and 1867. She will talk about the travel writings of George Henry Lewes and George Eliot during their visit to the Isles of Scilly in the spring of 1857, at a crucial time in both their careers, and for the islands themselves.

Suggested donations: £3 for DA members, £5 for non-members.
