Spring Meeting 2020 (Buildings Section)
Sat. 14 March 2020 at 2:00 pm
For this year’s Spring Meeting we return to familiar ground – St George’s Hall in Tiverton – with two speakers on engaging subjects related to churches.
- 2:15 Rebecca Ireland ‘Historic Graffiti’.
Rebecca is a freelance archaeological researcher with an MA in landscape archaeology. A recent growth area in archaeological/anthropological research has been the cataloguing and investigation of instances of ‘graffiti’ on medieval and early modern buildings, particularly churches. Rebecca is currently looking at historic graffiti in the South West.
- 3:15 Alex Woodcock ‘Links between Devon and Cornwall in Romanesque Architecture’.
Alex is not only a stone-carver but also an expert on medieval architectural sculpture. Following a PhD in 2003, he trained as a stonemason and worked at Exeter Cathedral for six years. He has since published several papers and books on Romanesque sculpture in the Westcountry.
- 4:15 Tea and refreshments (included in the cost)
