The Land between the Moors: Past, Present and Future

Tue. 17 September 2024 at 7:00 pm

Free – £2.50

A Zoom talk presented by Michael Winter OBE – Exeter University

Professor Michael Winter holds the Glanely Chair in Agricultural Change at the University of Exeter and chairs Devon’s Local Nature Partnership. He has over the years served on the boards of the Countryside Agency, the Commission for Rural Communities, Defra’s Science Advisory Council, the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Natural England, and Rothamsted Research. His research focuses on agricultural, environmental and socio-economic change, primarily in the west country. His latest book published in 2022 is an edited collection of essays The Land Between the Moors, published by Beaford. Michael is a long-standing member of The Devonshire Association.

The land between Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor comprises a large area of Devon with common features of soil type, land use, low population density, low wages and remoteness. Various attempts over the years to forge a distinctive identity, have not been entirely successful. In this talk I will outline some of these attempts, consider the challenges that continue to face the area and speculate on its future.

Please book with the organiser (details below) by a day before the event. You will be sent a link to access the Zoom session.

This talk is part of The Devonshire Association Monthly Lecture Series – a programme of talks on a wide range of topics presented by informed and respected speakers throughout the year using Zoom technology.
