The Master and his Apprentice (Bideford & N Devon Branch)

The Master and his Apprentice (Alexander Lauder and William Richard Lethaby). A talk by Naomi Ayre.

North Devon has a rich and vibrant creative history. During the 19th and early 20th centuries there was a wealth of creative talent from artists and architects to potters and woodworkers. Naomi, from the North Devon Athenaeum, will present the story of two of them – Barnstaple architect Alexander Lauder (1836–1921), who helped to create a “Crucible of Creativity” in North Devon, and his apprentice William Richard Lethaby (1857–1931), who became one of the leading lights of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
