The Mudges (Bideford & N Devon Branch)

The Mudges – some members of a well known Devon family. A talk by Mark Cardale.

Mark is a descendant of Thomas Mudge, the subject of a talk in 2024. He will begin by talking about the Reverend Zachariah Mudge, headmaster of Bideford Grammar School before he became the Vicar of St Andrew’s, Plymouth in 1732. He was the founder of the “Mudge dynasty” with five of his sons and grandsons making names for themselves in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

He will say a little about each, and their very interesting lives, but his talk will mainly concentrate on his youngest grandson Zachary who became an Admiral. He sailed widely across the world and was particularly engaged in the survey of the west coast of North America with Captain George Vancouver, before spending his final years in Plympton where his family lived for the next 150 years.

Cost: £3 members, £5 non-members.
