The Plymouth Blitz (Plymouth Branch)
Wed. 10 April 2019 at 7:30 pm
A talk, “The Plymouth Blitz”, given by Graham Naylor (formerly Plymouth City Library Historian).
Plymouth suffered greatly during World War 2. Devonport dockyard and naval base made it a major target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre. In what became known as the ‘Plymouth Blitz’, the city from Cattedown to Devonport was ripped apart and tens of thousands of Plymothians were displaced. The devastation of March and April 1941 was beyond anything ever imagined in the earlier years of the war. There was not a single part of the city that escaped, either commercial or residential, and there was scarcely a house in the entire area which did not sustain some damage.
Using archive footage, Graham will set out the facts behind the raids, the damage and the civilians who were tragically killed during those fateful nights.
