The Serge Trade in Devon (IA Section)

Thu. 22 July 2021 at 7:30 pm

Free

To be held by Zoom video conferencing.

A talk by Peter Maunder.

Devon’s serge trade has received relatively little attention from modern historians and remains poorly understood. Based on his research into the cloth trade in his native town of Tiverton, Peter Maunder will attempt to provide an overview of some of the more important aspects of the trade in the wider region, spanning the period from the late sixteenth through to the early nineteenth centuries.

Peter Maunder has a background in accountancy and history and a long association with Tiverton, and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He brings his local knowledge, business experience and almost 20 years of research, to bear on hitherto untapped sources to interpret the history of the cloth trade in Tiverton and Devon. He is the author of Tiverton Cloth (2018), which, in 2019, was awarded the Devon Book of the Year accolade by the Devon History Society.
