The Songs of Edward Capern: Finding the Poet’s Voice (Music Section)
Fri. 14 September 2018 at 6:45 pm - 9:30 pm
Presented by Nick Wyke & Becki Driscoll
Edward Capern, the Victorian “Postman Poet” produced over 600 poems during his illustrious but largely forgotten career in the mid 1800s. As part of a project with local author Liz Shakespeare, musicians Nick and Becki have set a selection of Capern’s poetry to their own music. This talk, illustrated throughout with examples of the music, takes you on a journey through the process of curating, writing and arranging the work. At times humorous and at others racked with melancholy, the poetry lends itself beautifully to melodies drawn from the folk music of Capern’s life and times.
Nick Wyke & Becki Driscoll are highly-respected musicians, composers and workshop leaders based in North Devon. They have worked with some of the leading lights of the English folk scene, always pushing the boundaries and developing new and inventive music. Their work journeys from the darker side of English ballad to uplifting country dance tunes, performed with skill, energy and an intimate connection with the audience.
