Open to all – to be held by Zoom video conferencing.
John Thorp, buildings archaeologist, will give a talk on one of Devon’s most quintessential building forms “Transhumance and Smart Longhouses on Dartmoor”.
The late medieval Dartmoor longhouse is a remarkable phenomenon. Nowhere in Great Britain or anywhere else in Europe was the form developed so far above subsistence peasant level. This online talk will attempt to explain the coincidence of peculiar and unique circumstances which produced a superior type of longhouse, which still survive in numbers as a defining architectural feature of the wider Dartmoor landscape.
