Turner in transition: rethinking landscape painting in the 1820s & 30s
A talk by Honorary Professor Sam Smiles, University of Exeter
J. M. W. Turner turned 50 in 1825 and the works of his maturity show an increasing willingness to use light and colour as expressive elements in pictorial composition. As is well known, this tendency climaxes in the works he produced in the 1840s, towards the end of his life. This talk looks in detail at watercolours of the West Country painted by Turner in the late 1820s and early 1830s, examining their subject-matter and technique and assessing their relationship to the later works of his career.
