Thu. 22 October 2026 at 2:00 pm

£3 – £5

Full title: Villa rustica, villa suburbana: How Italy came to the English Town

A talk by Dr Rosemary Yallop FSA.

Italian architectural forms have, over the centuries, had a profound influence on English domestic architecture. This talk will describe three ‘Italianate’ styles and in particular will explore the links between rustic Italian buildings and the design of the suburban villa in nineteenth-century England.

Rosemary Yallop is an independent architectural and cultural historian. She received her doctorate in Architectural History from the University of Oxford for her work on John Nash and the Architecture of the Picturesque and its influence on the design of the nineteenth-century villa. These continue to be a focus of her research, together with the architectural pattern books of the period, and provincial architects in the West Country, where she is based. She lectures for the Victoria & Albert Museum, and for ten years was Trustee and then Vice-Chairman of the Georgian Group. Rosemary is a member of the Devonshire Association and recently joined the History Section committee.

Booking is not required. Price: £3 for DA members; £5 for non-members. Please pay on the door – cash or card.
