Sadly, this visit has had to be cancelled at short notice. Please contact the Organiser for any more details.

3, Elliot Terrace is best known as the home of Waldorf and Nancy Astor.

A six story terraced house in a row of seven on The Hoe, it was built between 1865 and 1875 by property developer John Pethick and was first lived in by eminent high-ranking Navy and Army Officers.

Purchased by The Astors in 1908 when Waldorf was a Unionist Parliamentary Candidate. He was successfully elected in 1910 and again in 1918, but has to give up his seat when he became Viscount Astor. Nancy was successfully elected in the 1919 by-election. She became the first woman to take her seat in the House of Commons and retained the seat for Plymouth Sutton until 1945, her last speech being on the subject of fox hunting.

Waldorf died in 1952, and before she died in 1964 Nancy gave the house to the City of Plymouth as a residence for future Lord Mayors. Today it is used for civic and other hospitality by visiting dignitaries and circuit judges as well as a wedding venue and visits by organised groups.

Many items owned by The Astors are on show as are many paintings by Plymouth artists of maritime scenes of Plymouth.
